Dear Parents:

Please read the following classroom policies carefully and return the attached acknowledgement and comment form.  You will note that I value student - parent communication and encourage/require signatures as evidence of such.  I also value parent - teacher communication and invite you to contact me by email (meyerisland@gmail.com) or by voicemail (651-5067 ext. 1141).  I return all messages promptly. Please visit our classroom website at www.meyerisland.inspiringteachers.com .

Assignment Notebook. I will stamp Assignment Notebooks twice daily.  You should have already noticed the afternoon stamp which will always have a date.  The afternoon stamp will let you know that I checked your child's Assignment Notebook to make sure that all homework and assignments are listed.  In the morning, I will check for your signature.  Your signature informs me that your child shared the assignments with you.  When I see your signature each morning I will use a stamp to denote that I saw your signature and any comments, questions, or notes.

I will not allow students to turn work in early.  Ask to see your child's work so you may keep an active role in his/her life (and to keep him/her accountable).  I hope that your child shares his/her day with you each evening.  Failure to obtain a signature in the Assignment Notebook may result in a penalty of lost recess time.  The potential loss of recess time provides students with a great incentive to get their Assignment Notebook signed.

Grading Policy. Grades are based on the following percentages:

A         90-100%         Excellent work, great job.

B          80-89%           Good work, nice assignment.

C         70-79%           Average work, acceptable.

N         below 70 %      Needs to improve, unacceptable.

Papers receiving an “N” grade will be returned to the student and must be re-submitted with a parent's signature. The student has the option of correcting the paper in a timely manner to bring the grade up to a 70%.  Regardless of whether the student corrects the paper, however, a parent's signature is necessary.  I request a parent's signature so I know that you are aware of what kind of practice your child needs.

Late work.  I expect students to use their best effort and to timely complete assignments. I understand that unavoidable and unforeseen extenuating circumstances occur, if this is the case, please let me know as soon as possible.  I will extend deadlines as appropriate.  Late work is considered homework or in-class work that is not complete by the due date.  Late assignments will be penalized by a deduction of 8% per day of the maximum possible grade (i.e., 2 days late –16% of maximum grade, 3 days late – 24%).

Missing Work List.  Approximately every Friday I will send home a missing work list for your child’s academics (math, social studies, spelling, writing, and reading).  These missing work lists are very essential to home - school communication.  First, they inform parents of a student’s academic status.  Second, they keep the student and parents informed of any late / missing work that needs immediate attention.  Finally, they provide a regular basis to bring discrepancies to my attention.  A parent or guardian must sign these missing work lists.  Any missing work must be turned in on the following school day (usually Mondays) for any credit to be given for the assignment.  Failure to submit late assignments on the following school day will result in a final score of zero for each late assignment.

Absences.  Students who are absent will have several days to turn in their assignments.  A running log of Assignment Notebook entries is kept near my desk.  Any absent student should see me A.S.A.P. to get assigned work.  Each paper handed in late due to an absence must be labeled “Absent” at the top.  On our classroom website, there is a homework page which usually has the up to date weekly listings of the homework.

I look forward to our partnership in making this year happy, healthy, and productive.

Sincerely,

Mr. Dean Meyer
